The Chairperson of the Committee for HIV/AIDS Status, Lions Club District 404B2 Nigeria, Mrs. Folashade Afolabi, has called on Nigerian youths to avoid unhealthy sexual practices and substance abuse, warning of their links to increased HIV infections.

Speaking during a World AIDS Day event at Owena Motor Park, near Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, Afolabi emphasized the need for youth engagement to curb risky behaviors often fueled by idleness.
“Recklessness among some young people stems from idleness. Proper engagement could reduce the rise in HIV cases in society,” Afolabi stated.

She highlighted the role of peer pressure and substance abuse in risky sexual behavior, urging the youth to stay away from these influences.
“We are here to commemorate World AIDS Day, sympathize with those who lost their lives to HIV, and sensitise people to choose healthier lifestyles. Youths must shun hard substances and unhealthy sexual practices to reduce the menace,” she said.
The event targeted commercial drivers and sex workers at the Ojota garage, groups considered vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Afolabi also encouraged the government to expand awareness campaigns in schools, markets, and through religious leaders and media platforms.
District Governor of Lions Club District 404B2, Lion Tolulope Senbanjo, highlighted the club’s efforts to educate the Ojota community about HIV/AIDS, offering free medical checks, including HIV tests and blood pressure monitoring.
“We’re raising awareness about HIV prevention, management, and the importance of knowing one’s status. This disease is deadly, and abstaining from unprotected sex is crucial,” Senbanjo stressed.
He also noted that Lions Clubs International, with a legacy of over 107 years, focuses on eight causes: diabetes, hunger, vision, environment, pediatric cancer, youth empowerment, humanitarian efforts, and disaster relief.
