The Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr. Hakeem Shittu, has called for the adoption of world-class debate training in Nigerian schools to prepare young debaters for international competitions.
Dr. Shittu made this appeal at the conclusion of a two-day Train-the-Trainers workshop held at the LASUBEB Headquarters on Thursday, March 20, 2025. The workshop, designed for school debate coaches and adjudicators, aimed to equip educators with international best practices in debate training and adjudication.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Shittu emphasized the transformative power of debate, noting its role in fostering critical thinking, persuasive communication, and intellectual engagement—all essential qualities for future leaders.
“Debate is not just about competition; it is a powerful educational tool that sharpens students’ analytical skills, builds confidence, and enhances their ability to articulate ideas effectively. To position our students for success on the global stage, we must invest in world-class training methodologies,” he said.
He further highlighted the collaborative efforts between LASUBEB, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and the President’s Schools Debate Nigeria, stressing their commitment to aligning Nigeria’s educational standards with global benchmarks.
Dr. Shittu urged educators, policymakers, the media, and other stakeholders to work collectively in expanding access to debate programs, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to develop public speaking skills and showcase intellectual potential.
In his remarks, UBEC Debate Desk Officer, Shamsudeen Kabir Musa, reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to fostering critical thinking and public speaking skills through strategic initiatives such as the workshop. He encouraged participants to actively engage in the training and use their expertise to mentor and guide young debaters toward success in both national and international competitions.
Elder Dare Oritu, National Coordinator of the President’s Schools Debate Nigeria and lead organizer of the workshop, stressed that the training was designed to enhance coaching and adjudication techniques.
“This initiative promotes inclusivity, intellectual growth, and prepares young minds to thrive in an increasingly competitive world. By equipping debate coaches with global best practices, we are setting the stage for Nigeria’s students to excel on international platforms,” Oritu stated.
He noted that over 50 participants from the southern states of Nigeria took part in the workshop, reflecting its broad impact on debate education nationwide.
The LASUBEB Chairman’s advocacy highlights the growing recognition of debate as a vital tool for youth development. It also underscores the need for sustained efforts to elevate Nigeria’s presence on the global debate stage, ensuring that students receive the necessary training to compete and succeed internationally.
