The Children and Community Protection Network (CCPN) has called for urgent intervention to address the increasing number of out-of-school children in Lagos State. In a letter dated November 29, 2024, addressed to the Tutor General of Education District II, the organization highlighted findings from a recent sensitization program in Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area.

The event, organized in partnership with the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), uncovered significant barriers preventing children from accessing education. According to CCPN, many children had either dropped out of school or had never been enrolled, primarily due to challenges such as lack of a National Identification Number (NIN), absence of tax clearance, inadequate study materials, and socio-economic difficulties.

Despite Lagos State’s commitment to its “No Child Left Behind” policy, CCPN noted that many children still face hurdles in securing education. Through forensic audits conducted during engagements with affected children, parents, and community leaders, the organization assessed the extent of the crisis.

CCPN has urged education authorities and policymakers to take immediate steps to support these vulnerable children, ensuring their return to school and access to quality education.

This call for intervention comes amid growing national concerns over the rising number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, a challenge that continues to trouble education stakeholders.
