With the July 12 local government elections fast approaching, aspirants under the All Progressives Congress (APC) are intensifying efforts to secure councilor tickets across Lagos State. In Kosofe Local Government, particularly Anthony Village, Ward D, the political landscape is shifting as the incumbent councilor, Hon. Idowu Oluloro, prepares to exit after completing two terms in office.

Oluloro, who also serves as the Leader of the Kosofe Legislative Arm, is ineligible for re-election under the APC’s informal power rotation arrangement at the grassroots level. Despite his performance, political tradition in Lagos councils often limits councilors to two terms to give room for wider representation—a practice that contrasts with the open-term model of the State and National Assemblies.

His departure opens the floor for fresh aspirants to contest for the Anthony Village seat or negotiate political appointments in the post-election dispensation.

Among the frontrunners is Gbenga David, a current cabinet member in the administration of Kosofe Chairman Hon. Moyosore Ogunlewe. With strong backing from Lagos East APC GAC leader, Otunba Bushira Alebiosu, Gbenga is seen as a prominent contender, buoyed by his alignment with the influential Bush political dynasty.

Also in the race is Samuel Olakanla, a youthful and energetic APC figure who has served in several party capacities. A former aide to ex-Kosofe Chairman Hon. Afolabi Sofola, Olakanla maintains close political ties with APC Assistant State Secretary, Hon. Jumoke Animaun, and is known for his involvement in initiatives led by Farmcity International Chairman, Lanre Carew.

Another notable name is Kehinde Alakija, son of former Kosofe Vice Chairman Otunba Dele Alakija. A persistent aspirant and familiar face in the ward’s political scene, Alakija is regarded by many as competent and experienced enough to represent the community.

With the primary elections drawing nearer, political analysts say the APC’s ability to ensure a transparent and fair selection process will be crucial. Calls have been made for the party to avoid imposition and favoritism, as residents hope that the most qualified candidate will emerge to serve Anthony Village effectively.

The outcome of the primaries in Ward D will not only determine the next councilor but also signal the party’s stance on internal democracy ahead of the main elections.
