Prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State have issued a resounding call for urgent reforms and strategic coalition-building, warning that the party risks political irrelevance if it fails to address its deepening leadership crisis ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The call was made during a high-level meeting of PDP stakeholders held on Wednesday, June 26, 2025, at Ire Akari Estate in Isolo. The gathering brought together representatives from all 20 Local Government Areas in Lagos who deliberated on recent developments within the party and the broader political landscape.
In a jointly signed resolution, the leaders decried what they described as a party in disarray, alleging that the PDP’s leadership has been “hijacked by extraneous forces,” and warning that the situation poses a major threat to its survival.
“The state of PDP leadership today is a clear signal that the party is sorely sick and therefore needs the sincere attention of concerned members,” the resolution stated.
The group stressed that under its current circumstances, the PDP lacks the capacity to mount a viable independent challenge in 2027. They advocated for immediate steps to initiate alliances and collaborations with other political parties and civil society organisations to reposition the party for electoral success.
“The party as it is today lacks the capacity to stand alone to face the 2027 election without coalition, alliance or collaboration,” the resolution read.
The stakeholders further argued that forming strategic relationships is not only necessary to reclaim electoral strength but also crucial to restoring what they termed “the country’s lost glory and the excellence of Lagos.”
Signatories to the resolution include respected party figures such as Hon. Ramon Owokoniran, Otunba Okanlawon, Chief Onita Coker, Dr. Lekan Lawal, Hon. Kayode Jacobs, Babatunde Olanrewaju, Akeem Kolawole Olanrewaju, Barr. Niran Akinsanya, and Chief Dapo Sarumi.
The development is expected to deepen internal conversations within the Lagos PDP and may prompt a broader reassessment of strategy as the party looks to reposition ahead of the next general elections.
