The Executive Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mayor Dele Oshinowo, has announced the near completion of the council’s second Sports and Recreational Centre, a landmark project aimed at transforming the flood-prone Agboyi community.
The standout feature of the new facility is a 500+ capacity elevated football pitch — an innovative response to the persistent flooding challenges in the riverine Agboyi Town. Turf-laying is currently underway, signalling the project’s final construction phase.
“Constructing in this unique terrain has been no small feat,” Mayor Oshinowo stated via his official social media handle. “But we embraced the challenge of building an elevated structure to stay ahead of flooding concerns. It’s more than a project; it’s a promise.”
The development has drawn widespread commendation across social media, with residents and observers hailing the council’s ingenuity and commitment to community development.
“I lived in Agboyi road for 12 years… you are a rare gem, worth emulating,” wrote Engr. Adebowale. Another user, NAzZ, praised the initiative, saying, “Chairman wey get project pass some Governors.”
Some reactions, however, took a reflective tone. Commentator Eric Gamon urged Nigerian football stars to invest in similar infrastructure in their hometowns, lamenting, “They prefer buying expensive cars and dashing idiots money.” In a similar vein, Olawale Johnson added a prayerful note: “Any power that wants to drag you down, fire of God will descend on them. The zeal to do the right thing is not in most leaders.”
Meanwhile, residents from other parts of the LCDA are already lobbying for similar projects. A user named BambyStitches appealed for the rehabilitation of the Anthony Village Field.
Mayor Oshinowo’s administration has drawn praise in recent years for its focus on grassroots infrastructure and people-oriented projects. The soon-to-be-completed sports facility is being celebrated not just as a physical structure, but as a symbol of responsive leadership and innovation in public service.
“We can’t wait to deliver it to our people,” Oshinowo concluded.
More updates are expected in the coming days as the council prepares to unveil the completed facility.
