In a surprising political turn, Comrade Daniyan Oluwashola, popularly known as Sholay, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councilorship candidate for Ward C in Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA), four years after he publicly called for a boycott of local government elections and criticized the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

A well-known youth leader and community advocate, Daniyan had in the past accused LASIEC of lacking transparency and fairness, especially in its dealings with opposition parties. However, ahead of the July 12 local council polls, he says the political landscape has evolved—and so has his perspective.

“Although I still do not fully trust LASIEC due to its track record, it’s no longer just about party politics,” Daniyan told reporters. “The real opposition today is the people. Until we realise this, the same forces that benefit from our division and silence will continue to dominate.”

Over the years, Daniyan has cultivated a reputation for grassroots engagement, particularly through private-sector partnerships that have created job opportunities for youths in Ikosi-Isheri. He has also championed humanitarian outreach efforts, supporting vulnerable residents through non-governmental initiatives—despite not holding any political office.

With his growing influence in the community, his candidacy has drawn widespread attention, with many residents seeing him as a credible alternative to the political status quo.

“If elected, I will not be a rubber-stamp councillor,” he declared. “I’m here to defend the rights and interests of our people. My struggle is to rebuild our community, and I urge residents to rise above political divisions and give me a chance.”

Daniyan’s entrance into the race marks a significant shift in local political dynamics. His journey from electoral critic to candidate underscores a broader message about citizen participation and the changing face of grassroots politics in Lagos.

As campaign activities intensify ahead of election day, residents of Ward C will decide whether Comrade Sholay’s message of service, advocacy, and reform will translate into electoral victory.
