Child advocate and community development leader, Omoba Rasheed Awofeso, has called on public office holders and government institutions to embrace constructive criticism as a vital component of democratic governance.

Speaking during a morning chat with Kosofe Post on Saturday, Awofeso said democracy thrives on accountability, transparency, and openness to feedback, not the suppression of dissenting voices or intimidation of the press.

“Journalism is not a crime. Democracy should be competitive, and we should be ready to accommodate constructive criticism,” he stated. “Media harassment must be moderated at all times.”

Awofeso, widely regarded for his grassroots activism and youth empowerment initiatives, stressed that public engagement and willingness to respond to scrutiny are essential traits of effective leadership.

“That has always been my axiom — leadership must not shy away from accountability,” he reiterated.

His comments come amid increasing concerns over press freedom, alleged harassment of journalists, and shrinking civic spaces across parts of Lagos and Nigeria at large.

The child rights advocate urged leaders to view the media and civil society as partners in progress rather than adversaries, saying criticism should be a tool for growth, not a threat.

“Constructive criticism helps leaders sharpen their vision, refine their policies, and stay connected to the people they serve,” he added.

Awofeso’s intervention has been well received in activist circles, as conversations around media freedom and responsible governance continue ahead of the July 12 local council elections.
