Opposition parties that participated in the July 12 Local Government Election in Kosofe ( Agboyi-Ketu and Ikosi-IsheriLCDAs), Lagos State, have been commended for their commitment to the democratic process, despite the ruling party’s victory and low voter turnout.

Observers noted that while the All Progressives Congress (APC) retained control of the local council, the role of opposition parties remains crucial in deepening democratic engagement at the grassroots.

“Opposition is not just about winning elections,” a political analyst noted. “It is also about staying involved after the ballots are counted—providing oversight, constructive criticism, and keeping governance people-centered.”

Political commentators stressed that credible opposition helps ensure transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in local administration, urging opposition parties to remain active in monitoring the performance of elected officials.

They added that even in defeat, the opposition’s role in offering alternative perspectives and advocating for constituents must not wane, as this is key to sustaining democratic ideals and community development.

The Kosofe LG election ( Agboyi-Ketu and Ikosi-Isheri LCDAs) was marked by widespread apathy, with voter turnout reportedly lower than in previous cycles.
