Prominent political and community figures in Kosofe Local Government have hailed the decision of Ojota Ward councillor, Hon. Sulyman Baruwa, to address fraud allegations against him through lawful channels.
Baruwa, through his counsel, Rotimi Seriki (SAN), recently issued letters to four councillors of the Kosofe Legislative Arm, demanding a public retraction and apology over claims that he was involved in fraudulent land dealings. The letter gave the recipients seven days to comply or face legal action.
Public feedback monitored by KosofePost indicates strong support for Baruwa’s choice to seek redress in court rather than engage in political confrontation.
“This is a very damning allegation capable of ruining his reputation. I’m happy that he has sought legal redress. Time will tell if the affected party will apologize or stand by their words,” said Engr. Olusola Emmanuel Adedayo, MIAENG, Publisher/CEO of Moschinoblog.
Oloye Salami Oluwaseun described the move as “a good step” and warned against worsening political divisions in Kosofe. “The current political logjam in Kosofe, where a few councillors are trying to undermine the established structure, is worrisome. The recent unrest is a temporary loss of sanity, and party leaders must act cautiously. Peace may not return unless the culprits apologize and follow the path of honour,” he said.
Former lawmaker Hon. Ibrahim Adisa Mustapha predicted the crisis would eventually stabilize, remarking: “Nobody is where they are today without the establishment. If anyone wants to test their might, we’ll fold our arms and watch — it’s going to be a long season film.”
However, not all opinions favoured the political establishment. In a follow-up remark, Engr. Adedayo alleged that the elite had long thrived on imposition and influence over appointments. “In as much as Baruwa has the right to challenge the defamation, I’m happy that the GAC leaders were beaten at their own game,” he said.
KosofePost reports that it is closely watching to see if the councillors named in the letter will retract their statements and apologize or defend their claims in court should Baruwa proceed with civil charges after the ultimatum expires.
