A former Executive Secretary of Kosofe Local Government, Ketiku Gbemisola, has condemned the recent demolition exercise in Oworonshoki, describing it as “a stark reminder of the disconnect between urban planning and humanity.”

Gbemisola, reacting to the midnight operation reportedly carried out by the Lagos State Government around 1:00 a.m., said the use of tear gas and a five-minute ultimatum for residents to vacate their homes amounted to sheer brutality.

He faulted the approach as insensitive and lacking empathy for the affected families, insisting that development projects should not come at the cost of human dignity.

“Urban renewal should prioritize human dignity, not inflict trauma and suffering. A more humane approach would have involved adequate notice, relocation plans, and compensation for affected individuals,” she stated.

The former council scribe urged the Lagos State Government to review its urban renewal strategy and adopt a model that balances infrastructure growth with compassion.

“Development must carry a human face, acknowledging the lives and livelihoods impacted. Let’s strive for a Lagos where progress and humanity coexist, where the dignity of every citizen is respected and protected,” she added.
