Reports of an alleged move to recall Hon. Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, the lawmaker representing Kosofe Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly, have generated intense debate within All Progressives Congress (APC) circles in recent weeks.

Discussions around the recall have dominated several APC-affiliated WhatsApp platforms, with party members expressing divergent views on the legality, timing and political implications of such an action. While the right to recall an elected representative is constitutionally guaranteed, concerns have been raised over whether the move serves the broader interest of the constituency at this point in the legislative cycle.

Some party stakeholders argue that initiating a recall process mid-tenure could distract the lawmaker and weaken governance efforts in Kosofe, which they say is currently facing pressing developmental and socio-economic challenges requiring focused representation.

Observers also recalled that similar conversations had previously surfaced around the possible recall of Hon. Kafilat Adetola Ogbara, representing Kosofe Federal Constituency, but were eventually abandoned. They note that democratic mechanisms already provide structured avenues for addressing dissatisfaction with elected officials.

According to party insiders, aggrieved members retain the opportunity to challenge the lawmaker during the APC primaries expected in 2026, should he seek re-election. They also point out that the 2027 general elections remain the ultimate platform for voters to assess performance and determine whether a representative deserves another mandate.

Meanwhile, calls have been made for APC leadership in Kosofe to manage internal disagreements carefully and prioritise effective governance over prolonged political disputes. Stakeholders stress that sustained internal conflict could weaken the party’s cohesion and undermine service delivery to constituents.

As the debate continues, many residents and party members are watching closely, with expectations that political actors will balance internal democracy with the need for stability and progress in Kosofe.
