Several potential aspirants for legislative positions in Kosofe have begun early consultations and political engagements as activities gradually build ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Political observers say the development reflects the constitutional rights of citizens to vote and be voted for as guaranteed in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as international democratic frameworks such as the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Aspirants Begin Quiet Consultations
Findings indicate that several individuals interested in contesting for Kosofe Constituency 1 and 2 seats in the Lagos State House of Assembly, as well as the Kosofe Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives Nigeria, have begun informal consultations and grassroots outreach.
Many of the prospective aspirants are reportedly aligning their ambitions under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the dominant political party in the area.
Some of the aspirants have also begun notifying media platforms about their consultations and engagements within the constituency. However, many are said to be waiting until the end of the ongoing Ramadan fasting period before formally declaring their intentions.
Call for Professional Media Engagement
Meanwhile, Kosofe-based online news platform KosofePost has welcomed prospective contestants from across political parties, emphasizing the importance of democratic participation.
In a statement, the publisher of the platform, Bilesanmi Abayomi, urged political parties, aspirants, and their supporters to clearly distinguish between editorial news coverage and paid promotional or advertising content.
The platform also called for professionalism in interactions with the media, advising political actors to avoid making unrealistic promises or offers in exchange for media support. According to the statement, attempts to obtain free media services through inducements or unfulfilled assurances should be discouraged in order to preserve ethical standards in journalism.
