Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, distributed over 1,200 free urea fertilizers to farmers across the district on Thursday with the aim to enhance food production and combat hunger. This initiative follows a previous distribution of fertilizers provided by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support food security.
Speaking on behalf of the senator, Media Aide Mr. Enitan Olukotun emphasized that the gesture aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda focused on bolstering agricultural productivity. Senator Abiru’s continuous support for farmers, he noted, is driven by a passion to address food insecurity and empower local farmers.
In recent times, Senator Abiru has been at the forefront of agricultural support within Lagos East. Initiatives have included the distribution of farm inputs such as fertilizers, seedlings, and herbicides to over 300 crop farmers, as well as the provision of fully vaccinated chickens, feeds, and cages to over 100 poultry farmers in the senatorial district.
Dr. Hakeem Adetugbobo, the Coordinator of Agric-related empowerment for the senator, commended the efforts, highlighting the transition from subsistence to mechanized farming. He also praised the establishment of farmers’ cooperatives in the district, facilitating access to funds for farming operations.
Expressing her gratitude, Alhaja Onifade Muslimot from Igbogbo Bayeku LCDA stated that the senator’s support had uplifted the status of farmers in the community. Other beneficiaries, Mrs. Blessing Nwaezawa and Mr. Dauda Taiwo, noted that the fertilizers would significantly boost their crop yields.
Prominent community leaders, stakeholders in the agricultural sector, and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) attended the event, marking it as a key step in advancing food security in Lagos East.
