Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking the end of a 49-day leadership crisis that followed his impeachment in January.

Obasa’s return was formalized during Monday’s plenary after the former Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, resigned from the position. The motion for his reinstatement was moved by former Majority Leader Noheem Adams and seconded by Nureni Akinsanya, with no opposition.

Following the motion, the Head of the House’s Legal Department swore Obasa back into office, restoring him to the position he had held before his removal by 32 out of 40 lawmakers on January 13 over allegations of financial impropriety, high-handedness, and gross misconduct.

With Obasa’s return, Meranda has resumed her previous role as Deputy Speaker.

In his remarks, Obasa expressed gratitude to his colleagues, House staff, and the media for their role during the crisis. He also promised to be more receptive to lawmakers’ concerns moving forward.
