The Mayor of London has described Lagos as one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the world, highlighting the strong cultural ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

The Mayor, who recently visited Nigeria’s commercial capital, made the remark after touring the renowned Nike Art Gallery in Lagos. In a social media post that quickly gained traction, he praised the gallery as a hub for preserving Nigeria’s artistic heritage and nurturing young creatives.

Founded by iconic Nigerian artist and textile designer, Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, the gallery is internationally recognised for its role in promoting indigenous art through exhibitions, mentorship, and training.

During his visit, the Mayor interacted with local artists and cultural performers dressed in traditional Yoruba attire, posing for a group photograph that celebrated the diversity and creative vibrancy of Nigeria’s cultural scene.

“London and Lagos are two of the most culturally dynamic cities in the world,” the Mayor stated, stressing the importance of cultural exchange in deepening international relations.

The visit is part of broader efforts to strengthen cultural and economic collaboration between global cities, with a focus on using art as a tool for unity, education, and youth empowerment.

The Mayor’s post has since drawn widespread attention online, with over 1,400 reactions and more than 100 shares, as Nigerians and art enthusiasts across the globe welcomed the recognition of the country’s cultural institutions.
