Some stakeholders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta South have expressed concern over the delay in the announcement of the party’s primary election results, urging the national leadership to provide clarity on the process.
The stakeholders made the call in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Dr. Benedict Ferife, Coordinator of the Advocate for Transparency, Accountability, and Democratic Participation.
Titled “Transparency Delayed Is Confidence Tested,” the statement urged the party leadership to release the outcome of the primary election without further delay and reassure members that the integrity of the process remains intact.
According to the stakeholders, the NDC was founded on the principles of transparency, accountability, and internal democracy, values they said should continue to guide the party’s actions.
They noted that more than 24 hours after the conclusion of voting, party members, delegates, supporters, and observers were still awaiting the official declaration of results.
While acknowledging that administrative and verification procedures may be necessary, the group stressed that effective communication with party members was essential to maintaining public confidence.
“Silence and prolonged delays, however unintended, can create uncertainty and fuel speculation, thereby undermining confidence in an otherwise credible process,” the statement said.
The stakeholders called on the party’s national leadership to explain the reasons for the delay, provide timely updates to members, and demonstrate its commitment to democratic accountability.
They maintained that their appeal was not intended to question the credibility of the primary election but rather to encourage openness and transparency in the interest of the party and its supporters.
According to the group, delegates who participated in the exercise and Nigerians who have invested hope in the party deserve clarity regarding the outcome of the election.
The stakeholders further urged the NDC leadership to act swiftly to reinforce public trust and uphold the democratic values that have positioned the party as an alternative platform in Nigeria’s political landscape.
