The Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative (THURIST) has called on relevant authorities to investigate the alleged possession of firearms by operatives associated with Iru Eku Security.
In a statement released by the organisation, THURIST expressed concern over the recent appearance of armed operatives linked to the private security outfit, urging authorities to determine whether any laws regulating private security operations had been violated.
The group cited Section 17 of the Private Guard Companies Act, 2004, which prohibits private security guards from possessing firearms while carrying out their duties.
According to THURIST, adherence to the legal framework governing private security companies is essential to maintaining public safety and preserving confidence in the country’s security architecture.
The organisation called on the appropriate regulatory and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged firearm possession and take appropriate action where necessary.
THURIST stressed that ensuring compliance with existing laws is critical to preventing abuse, promoting accountability and safeguarding public security.
