In a bid to address the long-standing challenges faced by motorists and residents, the stabilisation process has commenced on the 32-km Ikorodu-Itokin Road. This significant road connects Lagos, Ikorodu, Epe, Ibeju-Leeki, and other parts of Nigeria. Distinguished Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, has played a pivotal role in facilitating this project.

Recognizing the plight of commuters and motorists navigating this critical corridor, Senator Abiru commended the contractor for initiating palliative work to alleviate the daily difficulties experienced by residents. These interim measures will serve to improve the road conditions while awaiting the commencement of the major rehabilitation, which is expected to begin in the near future.

Constructed in 1975 by Taylor Woodrow during the regime of General Yakubu Gowon, the Ikorodu-Itokin Road is now undergoing its first major rehabilitation after almost five decades. To enhance movement and ease congestion, palliative materials such as hardcore rocks, stone-based materials, and other construction stabilisation components are being applied to the failed sections of the road.

Currently, construction workers are focusing their efforts on critical sections at Itoikin and Agbowa. Progress has also been made at Imota, situated after Parks and Gardens Estate. It is anticipated that by the end of the week, the work will have advanced to Isiu, Ikorodu North Headquarters, and ultimately conclude at Sabo, Ikorodu.

It is worth noting that in April 2021, Senator Abiru raised a motion on the urgent need for the rehabilitation of the Ikorodu-Sagamu and Ikorodu-Itokin-Epe roads in the Nigerian Senate. This motion sought to bridge the infrastructure gap and bolster economic growth in the country. Demonstrating his commitment to improving the region’s road network, Senator Abiru paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, in December 2022. During the visit, the senator expressed his gratitude for the minister’s efforts in accelerating the construction of the Ikorodu-Sagamu Road and securing the approval for the rehabilitation of the 32-km Ikorodu-Itokin Road by the Federal Executive Council.
