In a crucial meeting held at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) engaged with the party caucus in the Senate to establish a consensus on the minority leadership positions of the 10th Senate. The party, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, disclosed this in a statement following the meeting.

Ologunagba clarified that the PDP’s nominations for the Senate’s minority leadership positions were still under deliberation and had not been finalized. He further stated that the party’s decision would be communicated to the Senate President, Sen. Godswill Akpabio.

During the meeting, the significance of having a robust and stable opposition in the Senate, as well as the entire National Assembly, was underscored. The caucus reassured its commitment to fulfilling this crucial role by defending democracy and championing the interests and welfare of Nigerians.

Ologunagba voiced the meeting’s condemnation of alleged interference by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the affairs of the minority concerning the emergence of the minority leadership. He stressed that the process of selecting the minority leadership positions was exclusively reserved for the minority caucus, as mandated by constitutional provisions and the Standing Rules of the Senate.

“The PDP and the senators are engaged in ongoing consultations regarding the emergence of the minority leadership in the Senate. They are determined to present a united front after careful and conclusive considerations,” Ologunagba stated.

Accordingly, the PDP will continue to provide essential leadership in this matter. As a result, the meeting concluded that the PDP NWC would officially inform Senate President Sen. Akpabio about the ongoing consultations within the minority caucus, clarifying that the nominations for the Minority leadership positions in the Senate had not been finalized. Once concluded, the nominated list would be appropriately conveyed to Sen. Akpabio for necessary action.

Ologunagba also expressed the NWC’s appreciation for the unity, steadfastness, party loyalty, and commitment exhibited by members of the PDP Caucus in the Senate. The NWC acknowledged their efforts in upholding and deepening democracy in the country.
