The Vice Chairman of Kosofe Local Government, Hon. Sosanya Oluwole, representing Executive Chairman Barr. Moyosore Adedoyin Ogunlewe, officially launched the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination program at the Primary Health Care Centre in Ogudu, Lagos State with the aim to protect the health of young girls.
The initiative, aimed at preventing or significantly reducing the risk of Cervical Cancer in girls later in life, has garnered support from the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and various health sector partners.
Hon. Sosanya Oluwole, in his address, expressed his gratitude to these organizations for the success of the program. The vaccination involves administering the HPV vaccine to children aged 9 to 14, promoting early protection against this prevalent form of cancer.
Dr. Oguntoyinbo Kehinde, the Medical Officer of Health for Kosofe Local Government, underscored the significance of the HPV vaccine. Not only does it contribute to a significant reduction in morbidity and mortality associated with cervical cancer, but it is also provided free of charge, ensuring accessibility to all. Cervical cancer ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Nigerian women.
The vaccination program will be available at various designated venues, including Primary Health Centers, schools, churches, markets, and community outreach sites.
Several dignitaries graced the event, demonstrating their commitment to the program’s success. Notable figures in attendance included Hon. Gbadebo Fatai, Secretary to the Local Government; Chief of Staff Hon. Abiona Akinyemi; Council Manager Mr. Olanrewaju Olalere; Supervisor for Health Hon. Elugbindin Abayomi; Supervisor for Works and Infrastructure Hon. Balogun Taiwo; Special Adviser on Special Duties Hon. Omokhudu Alufohai; Supervisor for Tourism, Local Government, and Maintenance Hon. Jonathan Odubamise; Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Hon.
