In an indepth discussion about the plight of Local Government Councilors, Comrade Olayiwola Sulaiman Opomulero expressed concerns over the dearth of elevations beyond community levels, deeming it detrimental to the nation. “Take it or leave it, it will be suicidal for the nation,” Opomulero emphasized.

Opomulero, who cited Mayor Dele Oshinowo as a rare example of a Secretary to Local Government rising to the chairmanship position, lamented the prevailing preference for pliant representatives by local leaders. “Most leaders at the LG level do not want brilliant, intelligent, honest, and disciplined people to be their councilors,” Opomulero asserted, highlighting the prevalence of leaders who fear being outshone.
He recounted the case of a capable candidate, Hartinga, denied the chairmanship position due to what Opomulero termed as “bad politicking.” Opomulero contended that 98% of councilors focus on personal gain, lobbying for perks like official cars and contracts while disregarding the needs of the community.
Opomulero’s observations were echoed by Abass Owoyele, who criticized the competence and knowledge of many councilors. “They aren’t competent, not to talk of performing their duties,” he remarked, painting a bleak picture of the sad reality in Kosofe and its environs.
Adding a resident’s perspective, Comr Mudashiru Ismaila Alabi questioned the true benefits of transforming councilors and raised concerns about self-enrichment in contemporary politics. He urged a careful examination of the purpose behind transformation, emphasizing the need for clarity and a focus on the general interest rather than individual gains.
Despite calls for elevating councilors to higher positions for better service, a majority of residents in Kosofe Federal constituency believe the current crop of councilors prioritizes personal pockets over community welfare.
Exactly! We need capable hands in the lg for the betterment of the community as awhole
