The Kosofe Local Government in Lagos State has taken decisive action to combat a cholera outbreak by providing medical attention and testing to numerous residents. The council, under the leadership of Executive Chairman Mr. Moyosore Ogunlewe, has locked all contaminated boreholes and wells in the community to prevent further spread of the disease.
At the commissioning of ten new boreholes across the council’s seven wards on Monday, Ogunlewe emphasized the importance of clean water in curbing cholera. According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Lagos State registered 104 new cholera cases in week 25, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The council’s response includes ongoing supervision and testing of people, food, and water sources, as well as public sensitization efforts. To ensure access to clean water, more than 20 boreholes have been provided, with five allocated to each ward.
Additionally, the local government has ramped up environmental cleaning and drainage clearing to maintain community hygiene. Ogunlewe reported a daily reduction in cholera cases and announced the launch of a free mobile treatment initiative to reach elderly and vulnerable residents.
“Our mobile medical outreach will ensure that children and other vulnerable groups receive free testing and treatment,” Ogunlewe stated, underscoring the council’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
