The political turmoil in Kosofe Local Government escalated last night with the arrest of a cabinet member, Ganiu Oyebanjo, by Zone 2 Police Detectives on Bush Street. Oyebanjo was reportedly tracked and apprehended over allegations that he illegally broke into the council office to steal classified documents.

The council has accused Oyebanjo of unauthorized access to sensitive records, but sources close to him have dismissed the claims as a politically motivated attack. A confidant speaking anonymously to KosofePost described the allegations as a “desperate move to tarnish Oyebanjo’s reputation.” The source further argued that with CCTV cameras monitoring the premises, a break-in without evidence seemed unlikely. Moreover, Oyebanjo, as a cabinet member, had legal access to council documents.

His arrest comes shortly after he petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), prompting an investigation into Kosofe Council Chairman, Moyosore Adedoyin Ogunlewe, over alleged misappropriation of public funds running into billions of naira. Initially, some cabinet members backed Oyebanjo’s petition, but reports suggest they have since distanced themselves from it.

With Oyebanjo spending the night in police custody, speculation is rife about his next legal steps. If not granted bail today, he may face formal charges in court. Meanwhile, the unfolding crisis has deepened the political divide within Kosofe, raising questions about power struggles, corruption, and the future leadership of the local government.
