In Nigeria’s political landscape, merit and personal success are often overshadowed by skepticism and misplaced accusations. A former opposition party chairman, in Kosofe Local Government,Bilesanmi Abayomi KOKO, who balanced journalism, business, and politics, recently shared his experience of stepping away from the system after witnessing disturbing trends.

During his tenure as chairman for the Anthony and Maryland area, he observed how political leaders celebrated failure while benefiting from their followers’ dedication. Disillusioned by this cycle, he voluntarily stepped aside. However, he notes that the same issues persist today—where achievements are rarely attributed to individual effort but rather to unseen political benefactors or powerful figures.

Recounting his journey, he highlighted how over a decade ago, his personal success sparked baseless rumors. After his wedding, he received a car gift from Mogaji Wole Arisekola, Publisher of Street Journal. Later, he was entrusted with major responsibilities, including price verification for vehicles and coordinating a cooperative that rewarded members threefold. His integrity in handling these tasks earned him the position of Managing Director at Wole Arisekola Transportation Limited (WATL).

Despite his transparency, news of his rising fortune—including assets worth ₦14 million and a Honda Accord—was met with political envy. Opponents spread false claims that party funds had financed his success, simply because they refused to accept the legitimacy of his accomplishments.

This pattern, he argues, continues in Kosofe today. Politicians who make progress outside party structures or without the backing of political godfathers often face unfounded allegations and character attacks. The culture of discrediting independent success remains a troubling reality, raising questions about whether true meritocracy can ever thrive in Nigeria’s political space.
