Hon. Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, member representing Kosofe Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly, has promised to push for compensation for residents of Oworonshoki whose properties were demolished by the Lagos State Government at the weekend.
The lawmaker gave the assurance on Monday during a meeting with the affected victims at his constituency office in Mende, Kosofe Local Government.

Residents of Ojulari Community, Oworonshoki, were thrown into confusion around midnight on Saturday when officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), backed by bulldozers and security operatives, pulled down several houses over alleged unapproved development. The exercise, which began around 2:00 a.m., left hundreds homeless. Witnesses also alleged that armed security personnel fired tear gas to disperse aggrieved residents before some were allowed a few minutes to salvage their belongings.
Addressing the victims, Hon. Sanni condemned the manner in which the demolition was carried out, describing it as “Gestapo-like” and lacking a human face. He revealed that he had already engaged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the matter, leading to a suspension of further demolitions in the area.

“It is unfortunate. We have to do everything to assuage their pain and support them. I have set up a seven-man committee to take inventory of all affected houses and property so that we can begin to demand adequate compensation,” he said.
The lawmaker stressed that while he is not opposed to urban renewal, such policies must prioritize human welfare. “If you are displacing people, where do you want them to go in this period of economic hardship? Urban renewal must carry a human face because the primary essence of government is to protect the welfare and security of its people,” he added.
Sanni said he would take the matter to the floor of the Lagos Assembly to seek broader government intervention for the displaced families.

One of the victims, Mrs. Aderonke Adegor, who wept during the meeting, described the demolition as traumatic and unfair. She said many affected residents are now squatting with friends, sleeping in schools, or staying at motor parks.
“We are demanding fair compensation and resettlement from the governor. We urgently need help,” she pleaded.

  1. They might put on a good show, but once the election is over, they won’t need you anymore. Don’t let them exploit your vulnerability to turn you against each other. You know what you want, so stay focused and don’t be swayed by their empty promises.
