The enduring friendship between Nigerian media personality Bilesanmi Abayomi, popularly known as Koko, and Nigerian-born British singer and producer GYYKA, also known as Austino, has spanned more than three decades.
Their relationship, which began in the 1990s, is a story of loyalty, shared experiences and mutual support, demonstrating that brotherhood can extend beyond biological ties.
The two first connected at the Golden Egg Hotel in Anthony Village, Lagos. What began as a professional relationship gradually developed into a close personal bond. At the time, Austino, a guitarist, musician, songwriter and studio engineer, worked as Koko’s personal gym instructor before later relocating to Obanikoro.
Their friendship deepened through their involvement in Nigeria’s entertainment scene. Austino regularly invited Koko to music video shoots and featured him in the video for his song, “Don’t Worry Everything Go Better.”
One of their memorable moments came in August 2004, when GYYKA gave Koko two tickets to the Guinness “Black Gold” Concert and Corporate Night at the Eko Hotels & Suites Expo Hall. The event featured international hip-hop star Wyclef Jean.
Beyond the entertainment industry, the friendship has endured through important personal milestones. In 2014, Gyyka and his wife travelled from the United Kingdom to Nigeria to attend Koko’s wedding.
Years later, when Koko was preparing to relocate abroad and Gyyka was facing financial pressures, he reportedly offered financial assistance to his longtime friend.
Although their busy schedules prevented them from reconnecting during Koko’s recent visit to the United Kingdom, the two are expected to reunite next month. Koko has announced plans to pay Gyyka a formal courtesy visit in the UK to celebrate more than 30 years of friendship.
Reflecting on their relationship, Koko described GYYKA as his foster brother and praised his loyalty and support.
“Gyyka is the true definition that a brother is not always related by blood. Sometimes, those who do not share your bloodline prove to be even more supportive than family,” Koko said.

His debut single, “Look for Love,” features powerful vocals and heartfelt songwriting centred on enduring love. He later completed his debut album and embarked on tours across Europe and Africa.
