Operatives of the Drainage Maintenance Department from Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources have swung into action, commencing a comprehensive cleanup and maintenance operation along System 156 Channel at Alpha Beach Road. This initiative aims to mitigate potential flooding in the area.

The cleaning, de-flooding, maintenance dredging, and silt evacuation operations kicked off on Friday, marking a proactive step by the state to safeguard against flooding incidents that have recently plagued the region.

According to Mr. Wahab, a spokesperson for the Ministry, the cleanup is vital due to illegal structures and squatters encroaching upon the Gbagada Bariga Channel. These unauthorized constructions obstruct the natural flow of stormwater, exacerbating flood risks in Bariga, Gbagada, Sholuyi, and surrounding communities downstream.

“Shanties along the channel have impeded the smooth passage of stormwater, leading to recent flooding incidents,” Wahab explained. “Property owners and squatters occupying these areas have been served a 48-hour notice to vacate. Upon expiry, the Ministry will proceed with the removal of these structures to restore the channel’s capacity to drain excess water effectively.”

The Ministry’s intervention underscores its commitment to proactive flood management strategies, ensuring that urban areas remain resilient against weather challenges. The ongoing operation is expected to not only enhance drainage capacity but also mitigate future flood risks in the affected communities.

Residents and stakeholders are urged to cooperate with the Ministry’s directives and support efforts aimed at maintaining a flood-free environment in Lagos State.
