As the countdown to the July 12 local government elections in Lagos continues, new legal developments have sparked fresh debate over the eligibility of incumbent Chairperson of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Hon. Princess Samiat Bada, to seek re-election.

Despite initial skepticism, the recently signed 2025 Lagos State Local Government Administration Law—particularly the clause limiting tenure for vice chairpersons who ascend office due to impeachment or death of their principals—has now been confirmed as authentic by multiple sources.

Observers say the law has potentially significant implications for Hon. Bada, who assumed leadership of the LCDA under such circumstances.

While Hon. Bada’s tenure has recorded several notable developmental milestones, including both completed and ongoing projects, political stakeholders are urging a sober reflection on her continued candidacy. Some believe that stepping aside now would preserve her legacy and avoid potential legal entanglements or post-election controversy.

In a conversation with KosofePost, a close media ally and supporter of Hon. Bada, who spoke under condition of anonymity, confirmed the legitimacy of the new law but argued that it may not take immediate effect. He compared the situation to the UK’s immigration policy, which differentiates between those already affected and new entrants.

Still, the timing of the law’s signing—reportedly done quietly before the elections—has raised questions about the intent behind its implementation schedule.

“If the law wasn’t meant to be effective immediately, why the rush to sign it now?” asked one political analyst.

Some of Bada’s critics argue that, regardless of interpretations, the weight of the law and the political tide now appear to be turning. They say it is time for the council boss to consider stepping down gracefully, citing the mounting emotional, physical, and financial cost of continuing a campaign that may ultimately be deemed invalid.

“Politics is about timing and strategy,” one stakeholder remarked. “She has played the game well so far, but her opponents are now gaining ground. It may be better for her to bow out while the ovation is loud.”

The Lagos State House of Assembly had earlier stirred controversy with aspects of the bill, particularly an initial proposal to scrap Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), before shelving that section amid public outcry.

With first week of July set as the final date for candidate withdrawal, political watchers say the next few days will be crucial for Hon. Bada and her supporters.

While supporters hail her achievements and political acumen, many now urge a strategic exit that safeguards her reputation and the stability of the party in the Ikosi-Isheri LCDA.

As the political terrain continues to shift, the question remains: will she stay the course, or step aside to avoid a legal and electoral battle?
