Photos of Modern PHCs in Lagos, Rivers Counter Peter Obi’s Claim on Nigeria’s Healthcare

Photos of modern Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Lagos and Rivers states have surfaced following comments credited to former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, suggesting that Nigeria lacks functional primary healthcare facilities.
Mr. Obi, who spoke recently in both Igbo and English, was reported to have stated that Primary Healthcare Centres do not exist in Nigeria, a claim that has since sparked widespread public debate and criticism.
In response, images of three well-equipped PHCs were released to the public. The facilities include the Ikosi-Isheri Health Centre and the Iga Idunganran Healthcare Centre, both in Lagos State, as well as the Primary Healthcare Centre, Rumueme, in Rivers State. The centres were described as modern, fully functional, and comparable to international standards.
Health sector data indicate that Nigeria has over 36,000 PHCs nationwide, forming the backbone of the country’s healthcare delivery system, particularly at the grassroots level.
Critics also noted that during Mr. Obi’s eight-year tenure as Governor of Anambra State, no PHC was reportedly constructed, arguing that this record weakens the credibility of his recent remarks.
The controversy has reignited broader discussions around political rhetoric, healthcare infrastructure, and the importance of fact-based public communication, especially on sensitive national issues such as health service delivery.
As reactions continue, stakeholders have called for a more balanced, evidence-driven assessment of the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, urging public figures to ground their commentary in verifiable data.
