A Friday sermon by Nigerian cleric, Imam Murtadha Gusau, has drawn attention amid rising tensions over alleged blasphemous remarks attributed to a self-acclaimed pastor, identified as Emmanuel Sunday Garba.
In the sermon titled “Muslims Loved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) More Than Anyone,” Gusau condemned what he described as repeated attacks on Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, accusing Garba of circulating provocative content on social media.
According to the cleric, Garba—reportedly based in Jos—has gained attention for sharing videos critical of Islam and prominent Muslim scholars. He also alleged that efforts to verify Garba’s pastoral credentials and church affiliations have not yielded clear confirmation.
Calls for Restraint and Due Process
Gusau said the situation escalated following remarks considered offensive to Prophet Muhammad, triggering reactions among Muslim adherents. He noted that many have called on authorities to intervene and ensure appropriate legal action.
While expressing concern, the cleric urged Muslims to remain law-abiding and avoid violence, stressing the importance of peaceful conduct. He called on relevant government agencies to act promptly, warning that delays could heighten tensions.
The sermon also referenced past controversies involving another cleric, Pastor Ezekiel Dachomo, cautioning against statements capable of inflaming religious sensitivities in Nigeria’s diverse society.
Message of Faith and Devotion
Beyond the controversy, Gusau used the sermon to emphasise themes of love and devotion to Prophet Muhammad in Islam. Drawing from Qur’anic teachings and historical accounts, he highlighted that true faith requires adherence to moral values, obedience to religious teachings, and prioritisation of spiritual commitment.
He cited examples of early Islamic figures who demonstrated loyalty and sacrifice, noting that genuine devotion is reflected through conduct and character.
Appeal for Peace
The cleric concluded with prayers for peace and unity, urging respect for religious beliefs as a foundation for coexistence in a plural society.
Observers note that the development underscores the sensitivity of religious discourse in Nigeria and the need for measured responses to avoid escalation.
