The lawmaker representing Kosofe Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Femi Saheed, may face a more competitive path to securing a third term as internal dynamics within the All Progressives Congress (APC) continue to shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Saheed first entered the Assembly through a by-election in 2020, following the death of his predecessor, Tunde Braimoh, completing the remainder of the tenure. He later secured a fresh mandate in 2023 and is now positioning for re-election in 2027.

However, political observers suggest that his prospects may depend significantly on the position of the APC’s influential Governance Advisory Council (GAC), particularly figures such as Bushira Alebiosu.

Shifting Alliances Raise Stakes

Saheed previously benefited from the backing of key political actors, including Samiat Abolanle Bada and former Agboyi-Ketu LCDA chairman, Dele Oshinowo, both of whom were instrumental in mobilising grassroots support during his emergence.

Recent developments, however, suggest a recalibration of alliances.

Bada is reportedly backing a new aspirant, Murtala Seriki, a move that could trigger a direct contest within the party. At the same time, Oshinowo—now pursuing the Kosofe Federal Constituency seat—is believed to have a strained relationship with Saheed, further complicating the political equation.

Additional pressure may come from other APC aspirants, particularly those linked to local council structures in Ikosi-Isheri LCDA. Some of these figures are said to enjoy the support of the current House of Representatives member for Kosofe Federal Constituency, Kafilat Adetola Ogbara.

Primary System Could Be Decisive

Analysts note that the mode of primary election will be critical. If the APC adopts a direct primary system—widely regarded as a more open, member-driven process—Saheed could face a tougher contest compared to a consensus or delegate-based arrangement.

Such a scenario would test not only his incumbency advantage but also his current standing within the party’s grassroots base.

Lessons from Lagos APC Politics

Political watchers also draw parallels with past developments within the Lagos APC, particularly the case of Akinwunmi Ambode, whose 2019 re-election bid was halted despite a widely acknowledged performance record.

The comparison underscores a recurring pattern in Lagos politics, where internal party dynamics and elite consensus often outweigh governance performance in determining electoral outcomes.

A Key Battleground Emerges

As the 2027 elections approach, Kosofe Constituency II is emerging as a strategic battleground within the APC. With shifting loyalties, multiple aspirants, and the influence of party leadership structures, the contest is expected to be shaped as much by internal negotiations as by voter sentiment.

For Saheed, the road to a third term may ultimately depend not just on his legislative record, but on how effectively he navigates the evolving power structure within the party.
