The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has cleared the massive heap of refuse that had accumulated in the Olopomeji area of Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area, following sustained public complaints and appeals from residents.
The intervention comes after video footage shared by community members on Saturday morning showed the successful evacuation of the waste, bringing relief to residents who had raised concerns about the growing environmental and health risks posed by the refuse dump.
The cleanup follows a public outcry reported by KosofePost on June 24, 2026, when residents urgently appealed to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and LAWMA to address the worsening refuse situation in the community.
At the time, residents warned that the mounting waste, combined with the ongoing rainy season, posed significant dangers, including blocked drainage channels, flooding, foul odours, and the increased risk of waterborne diseases and mosquito-borne infections.
Community advocates had also cautioned that failure to address the situation promptly could trigger a public health emergency and further degrade the environment.
Following LAWMA’s intervention, residents expressed appreciation and relief, noting that the swift response demonstrated that public concerns could attract government attention and action.
While commending the waste management agency for the evacuation exercise, community members stressed the importance of sustaining regular refuse collection and strengthening waste management practices to prevent a recurrence of the situation.
They also reiterated calls for residents to play their part by properly disposing of household waste, avoiding indiscriminate dumping, and keeping drainage channels free of debris.
The successful cleanup of the Olopomeji site has renewed hope among residents that stronger collaboration between government agencies and communities can help tackle environmental challenges and safeguard public health across Lagos communities.
