During his insightful presentation, Aikins cited India as a prime example of successful diaspora engagement. In the 1920s, over eighteen million Indians lived outside their home country, with many expressing a lack of interest in their homeland. Recognizing the potential of engaging the diaspora, a platform was established to gather their input.

When asked about the changes they wanted to see, the diaspora raised concerns about multiple taxes, licensing hurdles, and corruption. The Indian government took note of these grievances and gradually implemented reforms to address them. Today, India’s story is vastly different, with many Indians heading major multinational corporations and India experiencing rapid development. This transformation underscores the power of diaspora engagement.

Aikins also pointed to Ireland as another inspiring example of diaspora-driven growth and national consciousness. Less than a century ago, there were more Irish people living outside Ireland than within. Due to a lack of essential development tools, such as banks, schools, and resources, many left the country. However, a significant shift occurred when the Irish diaspora began returning, bringing their resources, skills, and expertise. Today, Ireland’s economic profile has been transformed.

Drawing parallels to Nigeria, Aikins highlighted the immense potential for positive change given the substantial number of successful Nigerians living abroad. By effectively harnessing their numbers and skills, Nigeria has the opportunity to rewrite its story for the better.

The event was attended by notable individuals including the Ambassador of Ireland in Nigeria, His Excellency Peter Ryan, legendary actress Joke Silver, international flutist Tee Mac, Mrs. Yemi Adenuga from Meath County Council Ireland and her husband Tunde Adenuga, popular television talk host Patrick Doyle, Mr. Cornelius Guilfoyle Honorary Consul of Ireland in Nigeria, Mrs. Aduke Gomez, Miss Alice Dina-Cleary, Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Council Hon. Wasiu Adesina, Director General of the Public Procurement Agency Mr. Fatai Idowu Onafowote, and Tunde Jakande, CEO of LGNA International, among other distinguished guests.

The Ambassador of Ireland in Nigeria, Peter Ryan, expressed that Kingsley Aikins’ invitation was part of the Embassy’s strategic partnership with Nigeria on development and mutual cooperation. The event provided a platform for valuable discussions and insights into leveraging the power of diaspora engagements for the progress of Nigeria.
