Hon. Afolabi Kazeem Bamisile, affectionately known as ABK and former Executive Secretary of Ikosi Isheri Local Council Development Area, has urged Nigerian stakeholders to initiate a comprehensive review or creation of a new constitution for the country.

ABK’s impassioned plea came in response to an article questioning the role of ‘GOD’ – Government Of the Day, suggesting that a revamped constitution could be a panacea for the myriad challenges facing the nation. According to him, it’s high time for National Assemblies, State Assemblies, Regional Associations (Afenifere, Ohanaeze, Arewa), citizens young and old, and all stakeholders to unite in the pursuit of a new or amended constitution.

Advocating for the recognition of Regional Governments with autonomous systems like State Police and control over resources, ABK emphasized that such practices have proven effective in many nations, fostering proper governance and progress.

Several well-meaning Nigerians echoed ABK’s sentiments, with Comr Mudashiru Ismaila Alabi emphasizing the pivotal role of constitutional amendment for national achievement. He asserted that without a constitution that works for all, the country risks remaining in the grip of unscrupulous leaders.

Omoba Awofeso Rasheed also joined the chorus, underscoring the need for a constitutional review. He emphasized that the 1999 Constitution, brought into effect during the military era, lacks alignment with Nigeria’s societal needs. Rasheed urged a thorough review to ensure that the nation’s governing document reflects its diversity and complexities.

Kosofe Post highlighted the significance of the constitution as the heart and soul of any nation, emphasizing its role in binding people together. The report delved into criticisms of the 1999 Constitution, pointing out that it was perceived as imposed by the military. Despite past efforts to amend it, the constitution’s alleged defects persist, sparking renewed calls for a comprehensive overhaul to suit the nation’s aspirations.
