Our unforgettable encounter—both directly and indirectly—with the distinguished former Senator of Lagos East and former Chairman of the Federal Housing Authority, Senator Gbenga Bareehu Ashafa, began during the charged build-up to the 2019 general elections.

At a time when many politicians overlooked the power of online media, one of Senator Ashafa’s media aides reached out to KosofePost and other digital platforms across Lagos East. The mission? To deploy a bold, first-of-its-kind 3D campaign advert featuring the Senator. That move signaled not just media awareness, but a deep respect for digital journalism and its growing influence.

While some of his peers secured third terms with ease, the Kingmakers—due to reasons best known to them—denied Senator Ashafa a return to the Red Chamber, despite his commendable performance.

But history charted a different course.

The unexpected passing of Senator Adebayo Osinowo on June 15 reopened the political landscape. Aspirants emerged from every corner—even those abroad, restricted by COVID-19 lockdowns, made their way back. Among them was the late Senator’s son, Dr. Babatunde Osinowo, widely tipped to succeed his father.

Amid the speculation and power tussle, without prompting or promise, KosofePost took a stand. We published a passionate article urging the Kingmakers to let Senator Ashafa complete his third term—just as Senators Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central) and Solomon Olamilekan (then Lagos West) had done.

What followed remains a golden chapter in Lagos East’s political history.

After the article went viral, one of Senator Ashafa’s aides reached out to express gratitude—accompanied by a signature gesture: a swollen white envelope.

It wasn’t an isolated act.

Years later, during a project commissioning in Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, the Senator once again showed rare humility and appreciation. After reading one of our reports, his aide reached out—again with an envelope of thanks.

In a time when many public figures use media platforms without acknowledgment or appreciation, Senator Gbenga Ashafa stands apart. He is a rare breed who gives credit, support, and recognition where it’s due. More than a politician, he is a bridge-builder, a friend of the press, and a father figure to many.
