Reno Omokri Explains Why He Joins Ramadan Fast but Declines Lent Observance
By KosofePost
Public commentator and author Reno Omokri has outlined his personal religious views in a message addressing an individual named Oluwaseun, explaining why he sometimes joins Muslims in fasting during Ramadan while declining to observe Christian traditions such as Ash Wednesday and Lent.
In the statement, Omokri said his participation in the Ramadan fast is an act of solidarity with Muslims, noting that the practice forms a central part of Islamic faith as transmitted through Prophet Muhammad and referenced in the Qur’an. He cited the scriptural basis of Ramadan as a key reason he recognises the observance.

The commentator also questioned the scriptural origins of Ash Wednesday and Lent, publicly offering a ₦1 million reward to anyone who could demonstrate where the practices are explicitly commanded in what they regard as holy books. He argued that the observances are not found in the Jewish Tanakh or the Christian Gospels and described them as historical traditions rather than direct religious commandments.
Omokri characterised Ash Wednesday and related Christian festivals as cultural developments within European Christianity. He compared them with traditional African spiritual systems, stating that such customs are, in his view, no more authoritative than indigenous practices, while affirming his personal belief in Ifá.
Despite his criticisms, Omokri emphasised that he does not condemn those who observe the Christian traditions, stressing that individuals are free to follow their chosen religious paths. He added that he only addresses the issue when directly asked and maintains respect for differing beliefs.
The message concluded with a cordial blessing to the recipient and reaffirmed Omokri’s public persona as a writer and commentator known for engaging in religious and social debates.
