The Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Kunle Koya, has raised concerns over an alleged plan by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to undermine Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Koya, who also blamed internal party actors for recurring crises within the PDP, said both external and internal institutions have contributed to what he described as ongoing political destabilisation. He warned that current developments suggest attempts to limit the emergence of alternative presidential candidates beyond Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election cycle.

According to him, such actions could weaken democratic principles and pose risks to the country’s political stability if not addressed.

Meanwhile, the PDP Chairman in Kosofe Local Government Area, Adeniyi Olabiran, disclosed that the party is considering adopting a consensus arrangement for its primaries due to time constraints.

Olabiran said there are approximately 41 to 42 days left before the primary elections, a timeline he described as too short to conduct a fully competitive process.

“Due to the limited time available between now and the primary election, it may not be a real primary but a consensus arrangement,” he said.

He added that the PDP is preparing for the forthcoming elections and would field candidates across all positions in Kosofe Local Government, expressing confidence in the party’s readiness regardless of the strength of competing parties.

While declining to disclose specific strategies, Olabiran urged INEC to remain neutral and adhere strictly to its constitutional and legal mandate in the conduct of elections.

He also referenced ongoing developments at the national level involving party stakeholders, expressing optimism that the Supreme Court would deliver its judgment on related matters in due course.

Political observers note that the statements reflect both internal recalibration within the PDP and broader concerns about the electoral environment as preparations for 2027 intensify.
