Gbagada FC defeated Remo Stars U19 1-0 courtesy of a 77th-minute strike by Tomisin Alasiri to hand the Blue Eagles the maiden edition of The Creative Championship Cup trophy in Agege Stadium on Sunday.
A delighted coach of Gbagada FC, Akinyelu Olajide spoke to Sports247 after the game to share his thoughts on the victory.
“We’re happy, we’re excited, we couldn’t ask for more, we needed to win something and finishing the season with this is good for us. We really worked hard for this and we’re glad that at the end of 90minutes we’re going home with the cup,” he said.
Bookmakers before the game gave Gbagada FC little or no chance to defeat the league champions but you can understand why as Gbagada lost to Remo Stars twice in the league 2-1 and 4-1, finished well behind them as well but the coach of the side Akinyelu Olajide explained the team learned lessons from those games which helped to defeat them in the final.
“It’s a good one for a final. They got a penalty, although I need to see the replay to see if it’s a penalty to me it looked somehow but I’m glad my goalkeeper made that save,” he said as regards the officiating on the day. “Overall, I’ll say the officiating was good. It’s a 9/10 for me, I give it to them.”
Speaking on chances of winning the league next season the coach said “that’s still about four months away, some players might leave, some may travel, new players will come in but we’ll be aiming for a double.”
Akinyelu Olajide encouraged players who picked up one award or the other, including the goalkeeper of his club who won the golden glove, to keep pushing as this is not their final destination, keep working hard as they never know when the big break will come.
