The New Nigeria People’s Party candidate for Kosofe Federal constituency (NNPP), Abdulwaheed Odunuga, has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for omitting his party’s name on the ballot papers during last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly Elections. He has vowed to challenge the outcome in court.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Odunuga alleged that the omission of the NNPP’s name had led to the disenfranchisement of many of its members, especially in strongholds across Kosofe Federal Constituency. He cited the case of NATASHA HADIZA AKPOTI & 1 OR. vs. INEC & 3 ORS. [2022] 9 NWLR. (Pt. 1836) 408-409, in which the Supreme Court had held that the omission of a party’s logo on the ballot paper is a non-negotiable vice that goes to the root of every election petition.

“Omission of the name or logo of a political party on the ballot paper is legally fatal since it is meant to be used by the public,” Odunuga said. “Most of our members were deliberately prevented from voting as a result of the omitted name. This is a violation of the electoral act 2022 as amended.”

The NNPP candidate urged his supporters to remain calm while he seeks redress in court. He expressed confidence that justice would prevail and that the outcome of the election would be overturned.

The omission of the NNPP’s name from the ballot papers has sparked controversy and calls for reform of the electoral process in Nigeria. Some have criticized INEC for its handling of the election, arguing that it has failed to ensure a level playing field for all parties and candidates.

As the legal battle over the outcome of the election continues, many Nigerians are calling for greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process. They argue that free and fair elections are essential for the country’s democratic development and stability.
